Evaluation Question 1

When we were planning our film we had to think of possible conventions that we could use, develop and challenge to attract the audiences attention. The two tables below are where we have looked at the conventions in popular films that are already out there today, and compared them to the conventions which we used for our own film. I have then included a key underneath the tables with examples of thrillers of where we gathered our research from. For example, box 1 is a convention used in the film Jaws.



We used the same convention of a woman victim. During our film the young girl is a victim as she is being stalked. We reveal a twist at the end, when you find out the stalker is actually the girls auntie. Revealing a twist, using close ups and a woman victim in a film are three conventions we decided to use from real products because they build up suspense to the audience and it was quite easy for us to come up with a thiller idea using these conventions.
The conventions we developed are hidden faces and loud music, we chose these because hidden faces throughout our film builds up the tension of what is going to happen next, will they ever be revealed or not. We thought this was a great idea for our film and we developed this by deciding the stalker should wear a hoodie to keep them hidden throughout the film. We also decided to develop loud music to keep the audience focused on our film and to find it more interesting than a silent two minute clip. We used a few different soundtracks and effects throughout our film to build up the sense of fear of why is the young child being stalked.
The conventions we challenged are instead of the typical male baddy we chose to have the stalker as a woman. This is something the viewer would not expect and we thought it would make a different kind of storyline for us to create. Most thrillers are filmed during the night so we challenged this and filmed the whole of our two minute opening during daylight. This makes our film different to the typical thrillers out there today.
